Two years after the murder of Margaret Harold, a family of four was brutally murdered outside of Apple Grove, Virginia. The Jackson family, Carroll Jackson, wife Mildred, and two daughters Susan and Janette were traveling home after a family reunion in Apple Grove on January 11, 1959. After the family of four left Apple Grove, they never returned home; this worried their family members immensely. A relative of the Jacksons was driving a couple miles behind the Jacksons until she ran upon the Jackson’s abandoned car. The concerned relative notified police immediately after finding the abandoned car. After police arrived, a search party commenced to find the missing Jackson family that searched for months without success. On March 4, almost 2 months after the family’s disappearance, two men discovered Carroll Jackson and his youngest daughter, Janette’s body in a ditch near Fredericksburg, VA. It was determined by the police that Carroll Jackson was shot in the back in the head with his hands tied behind his back. Janette was thrown down the ditch alive and then had her father thrown down the ditch on top of her; Janette died from suffocating under the weight of her father’s corpse on top of her. A few weeks later on March 21, Mildred and Susan Jackson’s bodies were discovered, buried, near Gambrills, Maryland[1]. The police determined that both were tortured and sexually assaulted prior to their death. After the Jackson family’s bodies were discovered a manhunt set out to find this brutal killer. The police were once again led to the same building discovered after Margaret Harold’s murder and discovered a button that was missing off of Mildred’s dress. Because of the similarities between the two murders, the police determined that the two murders were related and shared the same killer[2].
